When leaders claim moral authority while their actions contradict it, naming that contradiction isn’t a political attack. It’s an observation. Their behavior speaks for itself.
You put it so eloquently. I believe the whole world sees and knows what is happening in our country is wrong, inhumane and criminal. Only the ones that need to get this don’t give a damn.
Such wise words Mariann Budde. It is so heartening amongst current world events to see faith leaders raising their voices. I think often of Gandhi’s wise words that ‘an eye for an eye just makes the whole world blind’. And I am reminded daily, just how radical the message of the gospel is. Thank you for having the courage and fortitude to keep speaking out. I hope you know how much your words are a light in the darkness, and give hope to us all ❤️
I love the gentleness and consistency of your messages. You point to others and help us see a strand of love from multiple sources. We need your loving guidance.
Thank you, Bishop. We need you, all Christian and Catholic Bishops, and leaders of all religions to stand with Pope Leo continuing to seize the moral high ground. WWII tells us where all of this will lead unless our spiritual leaders continue to speak out for peace and social justice.
I am a UK citizen and have great worry about the USA. Now every country can elect unsuitable leaders....the UK has done this before.
I see the immense cruelty often from the charities newsletters. UNICEF MSN and others.
Heartbreaking tales from homeless grieving innocent people. As Christians our faith can sustain us in times of trouble. I have never experienced the world troubles like this in
my 80+ years. Your church and my own are
places of refuge for us and many others.
My parents got food parcels from the USA after the World War 2 and my mother said GOD BLESS America.
Eboo Patel is correct - we also try to be this way in Scouting America. Preparing young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Scout Law.
We have seen a decline in membership similar to the decline in visible morality.
The lack of morals driving the country today are bereft of the basics of citizenship, driven by the authoritarian dictates to make "the others" the enemy. We need to understand what citizenship means as Americans. Your statement that "each of us can be that person...tell the truth, look out for our neighbors, forgive a mistake, do something hard for loves sake, and speak up. That is close to the basic teaching of Christ...feed the hungry, care for refugees, house and clothes the homeless, heal the sick, have compassion for those in prison. These are the crux of all religions. I was so impressed by your sermon at the inauguration. I think the world would be a better place it was guided by a council of 12 grandmothers. Thank you for your courage, morals and strength.
Thank you for this, Bishop Budde, and even greater thanks for your Easter sermon at the Washington National Cathedral. It is worth listening to again, and again. 💛🙏🏻 🕊️.
Let's never forget how Vance denigrated, used xenophobic, racist fear mongering tactics about hard working legal Haitian-Americans in Springfield, OH, claiming they were 'eating their pets!' To date, Vance, a self-proclaimed Christian has never apologized for his transgression! As a perpetual liar, Vance is immoral, Basta!
I am grateful as always, Bishop Budde, for your voice in the darkness. Interestingly enough, just today the U.S. Vice President suggested that Pope Leo “stick to morality issues…” Bombing an entire civilization into oblivion IS a morality issue; so what does this suggest for your religious beliefs, Mr. Vance? As Bishop Budde has shared with us, when we’re confronted with unexpected decision making, we need to Step Up to the Plate, as we cannot serve both God and mammon. Joshua 24:15 reminds us of our commitment to follow God and intentionally choose Him over societal pressures.
Love your reminder: “Moral authority cannot be bestowed, won in an election, or taken by force. It is earned slowly, through consistent ethical behavior and a refusal to lie.”

You are one of the bravest candles. 💕 Thank you for inspiring us to light our own, especially when times are difficult.
Well said.

We will continue to do our best.

““The toxic culture of insult-slinging that Americans are so tired of stands as the antithesis of this founding ideal.”
